Ἄτλας (Atlas, “Atlas, a Titan”)
A book of maps

An atlas is a map book. The name goes back to Mercator's 1595 collection, and the Titan Atlas holding up the sky is the image everyone links to it.

The story

The Titan Atlas was punished by holding up the sky forever. Mercator called his 1595 map collection 'Atlas' (he said he meant a learned king of that name), and early map books often showed the Titan carrying the heavens. The word stuck for map books.

The Texas version

A road atlas in the glovebox was how your granddad got from Abilene to Corpus.

Use it at work

When one person carries the whole project, they're playing Atlas. Spread the load.
