tantalize

Τάνταλος (Tantalos, “Tantalus”)
To tease with something just out of reach

To tantalize is to tease with something out of reach, like Tantalus, whose food and water always pulled away.

The story

King Tantalus was punished in the underworld by standing in water under a fruit tree. When he bent to drink, the water drained away. When he reached for fruit, the branch lifted out of reach.

The Texas version

Smelling a brisket that won't be ready for 14 more hours. Tantalizing.

Use it at work

A goal that keeps moving every time the team gets close is tantalizing. Fix the target before you sprint.

Practice it in Skepsis
