strategy

στρατηγός (stratēgos, “army leader, general”)
A plan to win

Strategy comes from stratēgos, an Athenian general. It's the big plan; tactics are the moves.

The story

Stratos (army) + agein (to lead). A stratēgos was an Athenian general, elected each year. Strategy was the general's art: the big plan, not the single battle.

The Texas version

Sam Houston's retreat before San Jacinto was a strategy. The surprise attack was the tactic.

Use it at work

Strategy is where we fight. Tactics is how. Picking which market to win is strategy.

Practice it in Skepsis
